  • [01] PRESIDENT CYPRUS ISSUE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has reaffirmed his commitment to the creation of a peaceful, united and prosperous homeland for all its residents, irrespective of their ethnic origin, adding that ``our will for a solution is given and proven.``

In an address at the end of term event at the Rizokarpaso high school for Greek Cypriots in the Turkish occupied areas, which was read out by the Director of his Office Vassos Georgiou, President Christofias said that ``the effort is hard`` but noted that ``we press on with faith, drawing strength and courage from your example, the enclaved persons, you who stand sound in your home and keep the hope for the reunification of our homeland and people alive.``

``In our homeland, the choice is a one-way street. After all the inflictions put upon us, everyone must at last realise that 36 years of division are too much. Our Cyprus must be reunified with a viable and functional solution and our people must once again live together and create a hopeful future,`` he said.

He added that ``we remain focused on the aims for the creation of a peaceful, united and prosperous homeland for all its residents, irrespective of ethnic origin`` and that ``the Cypriot hospitable land can and is in a position to caringly and lovingly embrace all its children, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, and grant them prosperity and a comfortable peaceful life within conditions of stability and security.``

``If the other side and mainly Turkey is truly pursuing a viable solution, it will show by the positions to be submitted at the negotiating table,`` he said, adding that ``we are ready for a reasonable and under the circumstances fair compromise.``

President Christofias noted that ``if the other side shifts from certain unrealistic positions, we can reach a solution the soonest possible, and that is why everyone involved in the Cyprus problem, and mainly those with influence, should turn to Turkey, which for 36 years has been illegally occupying a large part of our homeland, violating the human rights and fundamental freedoms of our people.``

``Turkey and certain groups in the Turkish Cypriot community must be convinced that a reasonable settlement, which will be viable and functional, is to the benefit of us all,`` he added.

President Christofias assured that the state supports the Greek Cypriots enclaved in the Turkish occupied areas, and expressed certainty that the events organised at the Rizokarpaso high school will send messages of respect of diversity, the peaceful cohabitation of people of different language and religion, different customs but common traditions, common mores and a common fate.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] FM RUSSIA OFFICIAL VISIT

Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou will pay an official visit to the Russian Federation on June 21-22.

According to an official press release, Minister Kyprianou will have a meeting in Moscow with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The Ministers will discuss bilateral issues, aiming at further advancement of the existing excellent co-operation between Cyprus and Russia. The EU Russia relations, as well as other regional and international issues will also be discussed at the meeting. Minister Kyprianou will brief his Russian counterpart on the current phase of the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [03] MINISTER IMMIGRATION

Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis has said that Cyprus is faced with strong immigration flows, noting that one of the reasons for this is the fact that part of Cyprus territory is occupied by Turkish troops.

Addressing an event at the University of Cyprus on the occasion of the International Refugees Day, Sylikiotis said that Cyprus is a country faced with strong immigration flows, due to a number of reasons.

He referred to the continuous occupation of part of Cyprus territory by Turkish troops, to the fact that Cyprus is geographically close to one of the most politically unstable regions of the planet, as well as due to the fact that Cyprus entered the EU in 2004. But the Minister noted that immigration should not be considered as a threat or as a destabilisation factor for the economies of the hosting countries.

Immigration should not be considered as a threat or as a destabilisation factor for the economies of the hosting countries. On the contrary, immigrants contribute in a positive manner to the economic growth and the prosperity of the EU member states, he said.
