  • [01] PRESIDENT - RIZOKARPASO - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has assured that he will continue with determination, assertiveness and realism, and he will seize every chance to resolve the Cyprus issue. President Christofias was speaking before the students, teachers and Greek Cypriots enclaves living in the occupied Rizokarpaso village who attended an event held at the primary school of the occupied village. In his speech, read by the Director of his office Vassos Georgiou, Christofias said that Cyprus problem should be solved through a reasonable compromise leading to viable and functional solution so that all of us to live in stability, security and freedom.

`` Our will for a solution is given and proved President pointed out. ``If the other side, especially Turkey, seeks a truly viable solution, it will be seen from the positions to be submitted at the negotiating table. It will be seen whether the desire for a solution expressed in words can be translated into action, he added. He went on to say that ``we want to believe that we will continue talks in a spirit of creativity to achieve a mutually acceptable compromise solution as soon as possible. ``We are ready for a reasonable and under the circumstances fair compromise``, he said.

If the Turkish side changes some of its unrealistic positions we can reach a solution as soon as possible, he said sending a message to those involved in the Cyprus issue, and particularly those who have influence, to turn towards Turkey, which for 36 years, it has illegally occupied a big part of our country, violating human rights and fundamental freedoms of our people. ``Turkey and certain circles in the Turkish Cypriot community must be convinced that a reasonable settlement, which would be viable and functional, is in everyones interest``, he concluded. President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, who succeeded Mehmet Ali Talat in April as the head of the Turkish Cypriot community, have met once since Eroglu became the leader of the Turkish Cypriots. Last scheduled meeting between the two was postponed, following remarks by Eroglu that questioned his adherence to the basis of the ongoing UN-led talks. The top aides to the two leaders have met since to discuss developments. Talks are set to continue between the two leaders. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
