  • [01] FREE GAZA MOVEMENT - FLOTILLA - ISRAELI ATTACK

Free Gaza Movement has no contact with the persons on board the boats, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, that were attacked by the Israelis, according to the cofounder of Free Gaza Movement Greta Berlin.

``We are getting our news from our Israeli contacts inside Israel,`` she has told CNA, adding that ``we have no contact with the passengers on board the boats, at least ten have been killed and probably a couple of dozen have been wounded.`` Berlin noted that the casualties have been taken to a hospital in Israel but it is not known which hospital, however, according to the Movement`s contacts, the hospital is in Haifa.

Meanwhile, Head of the General Delegation of Palestine in Cyprus Khalid Najjar said the Palestinians condemn the assault by Israelis against the flotilla of activists carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, noting that such actions destabilise the whole region. We condemn these actions,`` Najjar told CNA, adding that they ``destabilise the whole region and we think this situation in Gaza, the seizure of Gaza, has to end because it is causing serious consequences to the people who are truly in definite need of medicine and food.``

Najjar noted that ``we all have been surprised by the action of Israel to peaceful activists who are in solidarity with the situation in Gaza,`` adding that ``we have called for the UN Security Council to meet on this situation because we think the consequences to the whole region will be very dramatic.``

[02] CYPRUS - RUSSIAN CENTRAL BANK

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation has issued instructions, which came into force on 29 March 2010, for the removal of Cyprus from the list of countries described as ``offshore zones`` with a privileged taxation system. According to a Central Bank of Cyprus press release, ``the removal of Cyprus from the list is a positive development and strengthens the reputation and esteem of Cyprus as an international financial centre.``

The Central Bank of Cyprus also notes that the instructions prove the close cooperation between the two Central Banks over the past few years in the sector of banking supervision.

According to a Regulation of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which was introduced in 2003, the opening of bank transfer accounts from Russian banks to banks operating in ``offshore zones`` is subject to various terms, conditions and restrictions.

    [03] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias assured on Sunday that the Greek Cypriot side is ready for an honourable compromise in the Cyprus problem and will do everything possible so that the talks for a settlement reach a positive outcome.

He added that his aim was a solution that will terminate the occupation and settling, reunify the territory, the people, the institutions and the economy, and will restore and safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people as a whole.

In a speech at the unveiling of a bust in honour of Tasos Markos who has been missing since the Turkish invasion, President Christofias said the Greek Cypriot side would continue making constructive proposals at the negotiating table, which would lead to reunification, and expressed hope that the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey would show the same political will.

President Christofias pointed out that a solution must provide for a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as defined in UN resolutions, securing the unity of the state, with a single sovereignty, a single international identity and a single citizenship.
