  • [01] BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY CYPRUS

Britain`s Foreign Secretary, William Hague, said on Thursday the UK will do everything possible to assist the ongoing UN-led negotiations for a settlement in the Cyprus problem.

I think all concerned know that the United Kingdom does stand ready to assist --and there may be all kinds of ways when those negotiations have got further which we hope will do-- on the basis of bi-zonal bi-communal federation with political equality, Hague said responding to a question by CNA during its first conference as the UK Foreign Secretary to the foreign press.

So, we will do everything we can to help push that forward , he added.

Hague also welcomed the resumption of the UN-led talks yesterday in Cyprus, noting that the most important is the parties involved to achieve further progress at this effort. ``The UK stands ready to assist at any stage,`` he noted.

Hauge said that the statement he had made to CNA during the election campaign with regard to Cyprus is completely valid today .

An extract from that statement said: Á settlement of the island division is essential if Turkeys journey to the European Union membership is to succeed. Cyprus will have a friend in the new government , a friend who will work hard to support Cypriots in their effort to create a free , united and prosperous future for the whole island , for the benefit of all its people.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

    [02] NATO CHIEF CYPRUS

Problems between the EU and NATO, resulting from differences between Cyprus and Turkey, have to be resolved, a press conference given by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Ashton of Upholland has heard.

Rasmussen also said that Cyprus, an EU member state, deserves a seat at the table when there is a dialogue between NATO and the European Union.

The two officials in Brussels met for the first time since Ashton has been appointed to her post.
