  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TALKS

President Demetris Christofias has pointed out that the outcome of efforts to solve the Cyprus problem will be judged at the negotiating table and not at any social dinners.

Asked if he is encouraged after the dinner he had on Tuesday night with the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, the President pointed out that social encounters, relations and discussions are one thing and political views are another thing.

Things will be judged at the negotiating table and not over dinner tables, he added.

The President made these remarks on departure from the Presidential Palace for Nicosia airport, where talks for the Cyprus question resumed after a recess due to the so-called elections in the northern Turkish occupied areas, which resulted in the rise of Dervis Eroglu at the helm of the Turkish Cypriot community.

President Christofias was also invited to comment on statements by Turkish Minister for EU Affairs and Chief negotiator Egemen Bagis, who had said that Turkey will not abandon Cyprus for the EU and that Turkish troops will not withdraw from Cyprus before a settlement is reached.

What did you expect from Mr. Bagis. He repeats himself. He reiterates over and over again statements of the Turkish leadership, he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began peace talks in September 2008. Today Christofias and Eroglu resume the peace talks.
