[01] SPOKESMAN - UN CHIEF REPORT

Commenting on Friday on the UNSGs report, the Spokesman stressed the fact that the report notes that the Cyprus talks must resume within the established framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the leaders joint statements of 23 May and 1 July 2008.

The government, he said, will study the report and act accordingly.

The UNSGs report on his mission of good offices in Cyprus is in general terms satisfactory. In view of the continuation of the intercommunal dialogue, for which there is a special reference in the report, the Secretary General followed the common practice of recording the facts which cover the period until the 30th of April 2010, the Spokesman said.

Stephanou added that the report notes that following the change of leadership in the Turkish Cypriot community, the international community encourages the continuation of the negotiations in a positive spirit and the pursuit of a settlement based on United Nations parameters set out in the relevant Security Council resolutions.

So, we see that in the report, the UN resolutions and the two joint statements are recorded, which set the basis on which the negotiations are being carried out and for this we have worked very hard, he continued.

The Spokesman said that the achievement of a solution of the Cyprus problem within 2010 is the Greek Cypriot side`s wish as well, but stressed that a precondition to this is that both communities work with sincerity on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions for the achievement of a mutually agreed solution that would be subject to the approval of the two communities in two simultaneous and separate referenda.

Stephanou said that the Greek Cypriot side has proved its willingness to reach a solution of the problem and expressed the wish that the same willingness is shown by the Turkish side as well, in order to reach a solution.

Concluding, he noted that no UNSG report has ever been understood as an interim agreement.

The report on the UNSG`s mission of good offices in Cyprus, which was submitted on Thursday to the UN Security Council, covers developments from 25 November 2009 to 30 April 2010, and brings up to date the record of activities carried out by his mission regarding the fully fledged negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders.

[02] CYPRUS - SERBIA - RELATIONS

Addressing the Business Forum organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday on the occasion of the official visit of President of Serbia Boris Tadic, President Christofias said he absolutely and fully agrees with President Tadic that ``neither of us are satisfied with the level of economic and trade relations between our countries.

There is no reason not to upgrade our relations in all fields. Our principle is to promote the meetings between the Chambers and businesspeople, to upgrade and multiply exchanges, common investments and joint ventures, he added.

The President talked about Cyprus favourable business environment, excellent relations with its neighbouring Middle Eastern countries, its well-developed infrastructure, macroeconomic stability and low corporate tax of 10%, which have made it an ideal place for conducting international business.

[03] GAROYIAN - TADIC - MEETING

According to an official press release, Garoyian expressed towards the Serbian President Cyprus full support to the efforts of Serbia for maintaining its territorial integrity and independence, pointing out that Cyprus will continue to support Serbia in all international fora and especially in the EU, which Serbia aspires to join.

Tadic reaffirmed the solidarity of Serbia with the struggle of Cypriots to reunify their country.

According to the press release, they also exchanged views on the situation in the Balkans and the broader region, as well as the economic situation of the two countries and the effects of the global financial crisis on their growth.

[04] FM KYPRIANOU - CUBAN FM

Rodriguez, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, held a meeting on Friday with his Cypriot counterpart Marcos Kyprianou.

In statements after the meeting, Rodriguez reiterated the very well known and traditional position of Cuba in support of a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue, through peaceful negotiations on the basis of the UN framework, and for the sake of both communities.

Kyprianou stated that such meetings presented them with the opportunity to exchange views on bilateral issues and issues of common interest. I had the opportunity to brief my colleague on the process of direct negotiations, on how we conceive the change in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community. And I reiterated our will for finding a functional and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, he stressed.
