The National Council, the top advisory body to the President of the Republic on the handling of the Cyprus issue, concluded Thursday its sixth meeting without issuing a joint communique.

In statements after the meeting, convened in view of the resumption of the UN-led talks for a Cyprus settlement, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that during the meeting ``a detailed discussion and in-depth dialogue took place with the parties expressing their positions and views on all issues of the Cyprus problem``.

``We express our regret because after meetings of six days it was not possible to issue a joint communique even regarding the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem, as included in the joint communique of last September``, Stephanou noted.

According to Stephanou, one of the issues discussed was the European Commission regulation for direct trade between the EU and the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, on which ``we have reaffirmed the decision of the Republic of Cyprus to defend itself with all given political and legal means, with the aim to block the regulation``.

In this framework, he added, the Republic in cooperation with the political parties will promote Cyprus` proposal for the return of the fenced-off city of Famagusta under UN administration and the commencement of trade in the framework of legality and under the EU`s auspices.

Replying to a question on the meaning of the lack of joint communique in view of the resumption of the talks with the Dervis Eroglu, as the new Turkish Cypriot leader, Stephanou said the position is clear as laid down by the Cypriot President Demetris Christofias in his letter to the UN Secretary-General.

``We will proceed to the talks, we want the resumption of the talks on the same basis as agreed between the two communities in the framework of the same process and from the point the talks were suspended. This is how we will continue, always, with the aim for a solution to the Cyprus problem``, he noted.

UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus which began in September 2008, will resume on May 26 after a brief recess for the ``elections`` in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the island, which saw the rise of Dervis Eroglu as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.
