[01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - MEETING

The meeting is set to start at 1700, at the Presidential Palace, chaired by President Demetris Christofias.

Speaking after the last Council meeting, on 12 May, Governement Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that President Christofias had outlined his positions on issues and questions concerning the Cyprus problem, raised during previous Council meetings.

The President has summarized several issues discussed so far and it has been agreed that during the next meeting of the National Council, the discussion on various issues, including those that the President has summarized, will continue, Stephanou said, noting that the political parties that make up the Council can submit to the Council specific concerns before the next meeting which could be taken up for discussion.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Demetris Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began in September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The process was interrupted on March 30 because of the so-called elections for a new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, won by Dervis Eroglu.

[02] PRESIDENT - EU-LATIN AMERICA SUMMIT

The international crisis has revealed the weaknesses of the supervisory system. The absence of efficient regulation and supervision systems was the inherent cause of the severe problems we face today, and have led to what could be described as anarchy of the market, he stressed. He said, we welcome the important progress that has been achieved in the area of financial markets in a relatively short period; but financial markets are still very vulnerable.

We should look into the real causes of this crisis. The lack of supervision in the financial sector is a factor that was correctly taken into account. However, we cannot forget that the apotheosis of the role of the market was the main reason which had led to speculation and anarchy in the market. Consequently these developments were the driving force of the last crisis, he noted. This crisis, he said, has brought to the forefront the need for the state to regulate the market in a well-balanced way.

The absolute and dogmatic approaches which originate either from the intervention of the state or the demonisation of any intervention by the state, he added, lead to deregulation and crises, the price of which is usually paid by the ordinary people. President Christofias said this Summit presents a unique opportunity to express our determination for an immediate, joint, consistent, responsible and global action. In our endeavour to build a new international financial architecture, we should support employment and safeguard social cohesion.

[03] CYPRUS - SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO

Cyprus participates in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 with its own pavilion. The pavilion, in line with the general theme of the Expo, presents, through a feast of images and sounds, the historical development of urban centers in Cyprus, the parameters of their current development and their future prospects.

In the framework of the Shanghai World Expo and during the six months to come, Cyprus will be organizing inside the Expo zone a number of activities, including business and tourist promotion events and cultural performances, in order to promote Cyprus and familiarize foreigners with the history and culture of Cyprus. The local Cultural Folkloric Society Vasilitzia participated in the festivities for Europe Day (9 May), which took place in the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
