  • [01] VOLCANIC ASH - FLIGHTS

Twelve departures and eleven arrivals from and to various European destinations, to and from the airports of Larnaca and Paphos, have been affected on Monday due to the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland covering the air space of several European countries.

Director of Communications and Public Relations for Hermes Airports Adamos Aspris said that 23 flights have been affected, causing delays, cancellations or the rescheduling of flights.

He added that for Larnaca 10 departures and nine arrivals have been affected, and for Paphos two departures and two arrivals.

Aspris noted that indications were encouraging and urged travelers to contact the airlines or travel agents to confirm the times of their flights.

    [02] UNHCR - CYPRUS - ASYLUM

New Representative of UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Cyprus Nasr Ishak has expressed to Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis his appreciation to efforts made by the Cyprus government as regards asylum issues.

An official press release issued here said that during the meeting Sylikiotis briefed Ishak on all issues regarding asylum seekers and those who are eligible to international protection in Cyprus. He also informed Ishak about the difficulties and pressures Cyprus faces due to its political problem, its small size and its geographical position, as it is near countries that are politically unstable and from which many of the refugees come. He referred to the example of the Palestinians who come from Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

Sylikiotis also discussed with Ishak about the European asylum policy, including the additional actions for the reestablishment of refugees in the EU and the redistribution of refugees within EU member states.

He said that Cyprus supports the conclusion of the Common European Asylum System the soonest possible and noted that UNHCR can and must play the most important role in addressing the problem of refugees effectively.

    [03] PROTARAS - ANCIENT CAVE

A radial cave, which appears to belong to the Hellenistic or Roman period, containing tombs with bones and amphorae, was found on Monday by workers constructing Phase B of the coastal pedestrian precinct in Protaras, Cyprus.

Paralimni Mayor Andreas Evangelou said that during works the ground gave way and revealed a cave, containing ``what appear to be four ancient basins, in other words ancient tombs, indeed one with coloured pictures, some bones and a number of amphorae.``

``Work stopped at once and the Paralimni Municipality and the Department of Antiquities were informed,`` he said, adding that ``the cave has been temporarily covered and is guarded by the Paralimni Police.``

Evangelou noted that the Department of Antiquities is expected to visit the area on Tuesday to evaluate the findings.
