  • [01] PRESIDENT DIRECT TRADE REGULATION CYPRUS ISSUE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that the EU regulation on direct trade of Cyprus` northern Turkish occupied areas with the EU violates Protocol 10 of Cyprus Accession Treaty to the EU.

Addressing an event organised in the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU in Brussels, President Christofias said that despite the fact, that the Turkish side is becoming more and more negative, and developments in occupied Cyprus are not positive, there is an effort to cover this as well as an effort to approve decisions which do not respect the Republic of Cyprus, as an EU member state.

Cyprus, he went on to note, is an EU member state, whose legal government can not exert full control over its territory, since 37% of it is occupied by the Turkish army since 1974.

President Christofias underlined that the occupied part of Cyprus belongs to Cyprus and as a result it is EU territory.

As regards Protocol 10 of the EU Cyprus Accession Treaty, he said that this Protocol refers to the anomalous situation in Cyprus, namely to the fact that the legal government can not exert full control over its whole territory.

Not only does this regulation on direct trade not comply with the Protocol 10, it also violates it, he underlined.

He reassured that the government is making steps so that the regulation is not approved.

The President recalled that Turkish Cypriots can trade their goods through their country, which is the Republic of Cyprus, and through its legal ports or airports, which are controlled by the Cypriot government`s authorities.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he said that the Greek Cypriot side has asked for the continuation of the Cyprus talks from the point they stopped, before the so called elections in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

He said that in his letter to the UNSG, the new Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, refers only to the Christofias - Talat announcement of the 23rd of May but not on the one of the 1st of July, which provides for a solution in Cyprus based on one state, one and only sovereignty, citizenship and international personality.

This gives a negative message, he pointed out, adding that when talks resume it will be clear whether Eroglu will indeed continue from the point the talks stopped.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began in September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The process was interrupted on March 30 because of the so-called elections for a new Turkish Cypriot leader, which Dervis Eroglu has won.

    [02] PRESIDENT ECONOMY 35TH CIF

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has warned that failure to achieve fiscal consolidation will have knock-on effects on our economy.

In his welcome address at the opening of the 35th Cyprus International Fair 2010, which was read by Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalidis, President Christofias congratulated the participants in this year`s Fair which coincides with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus.

As he said, the annual institution of the International Fair records with the most vivid way the steps of progress, growth and prosperity of the people of Cyprus, noting that ``the 35th Cyprus International Fair, with its multifaceted role, is the most important commercial event of the year for Cyprus.

Welcoming the foreign officials and other guests, as well as the representatives of all the participating countries in the Fair, Christofias said that their presence here is a sign of confidence in the economy of the country, as well as an expression of their friendly sentiments towards the people of Cyprus.
