AC Omonoia of Nicosia secured its first Cypriot League title in seven
years, after beating on Sunday with 1-0 its ``eternal rival`` and
previous title holder APOEL. A goal by Stathis Aloneftis at the 17`
minute gave Omonia the third victory in the four encounters with APOEL
this season.
In the day`s other big game, runner up FC Anorthosis Famagusta secured
a goalless draw with Apollon Limassol FC. This result left Omonia seven
points clear from Anorthosis, one round before the completion of the
Cypriot league, whereas the battle for the second place, which yields a
ticket for the UEFA Europa League`s second qualifying round remains
open.
Omonia, which reached 20 titles in its history, as APOEL, will enter
the next season`s UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.
