  • [01] PRESIDENT - NATIONAL COUNCIL - THIRD DAY

The National Council, the top advisory body to the Cypriot President on the Cyprus problem, convenes on Wednesday for the third day in row to continue discussion on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement.

At today`s session, which began at 10 am, the members of the National Council will be briefed by the Attorney General on the issue of the latest European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decision on the so-called property commission in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus, while the political parties will continue the presentation of their views.

At yesterdays session, the left wing ruling party AKEL, and the right wing opposition party Democratic Rally (DISY), presented their positions.

Replying to questions after the conclusions of Tuesdays meeting, President Christofias said that an open dialogue is taking place, adding that the climate is good.

President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The process was interrupted on March 30 ahead of the so-called ``elections``.

    [02] DOWNER TALKS BASIS

The UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, has expressed the view that the UN-led negotiations in Cyprus should continue on the basis of what has taken place so far and the two leaders to build on the progress that has been made.

He also said the UN would like a conclusion sooner rather than later because if it drags on indefinitely that constitutes a failure of the process.

The UN diplomat said there has to be a spirit of compromise based on a determination to achieve an agreement and urged the leaders to get back to the negotiating table before long and push the process on as quickly as they reasonably can.

Downer made the remarks during a press conference at the UN headquarters where he held a meeting with the Secretary-General and was expected to meet with the USGs Le Roy and Lyn Pascoe and with the Cyprus team at the Secretariat as well as with some of the Missions, the P5 Missions and some other interested parties, he said.

    [03] UN -TURKISH VIOLATIONS PROTEST

Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael, in a letter to the UN Secretary General dated 15th April 2010, protested over new violations of international air traffic regulations and national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey, recorded from 1 February to 30 March 2010.

The letter was circulated on Tuesday as an official UN document.

In his latter, Cyprus Permanent Representative expresses the Cyprus Governments strong protest for the violations and calls for their immediate ending.

He notes that that these actions blatantly endanger the safety of air flights and violate the international law and the international air traffic regulations while at the same time put at stake the peace and stability of the region
