  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - SECOND DAY - MEETING

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President of the Republic for the handling of the Cyprus problem, entered its second day of session on Tuesday during which a broad discussion on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement is taking place.

On Monday, the Democratic Party (DIKO), the Movement of Social Democrats EDEK, the European Party (EVROKO) and the Cyprus Greens, presented their views and positions on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.

On Tuesday, the left wing ruling party AKEL, and the right wing opposition party Democratic Rally (DISY), are expected to present their positions.

The meeting comes in the wake of the ``election`` of Dervis Eroglu as the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

In statements during arrival, both AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou and DISY leader Nicos Anastasiades said they would outline their positions verbally.

Kyprianou described as very constructive the climate in which the session takes place, noting there is respect for each partys positions.

According to Kyprianou, the session will be extended by an extra day, adding that on Wednesday, the Attorney-General will inform members on the recent decision of the European Court of Human Rights on the so-called property commission in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

Anastasiades said there was no need for parties to put forward their positions in writing, adding that this will happen with the decisions.

European Party leader Demetris Syllouris also echoed the view that the session will be extended by one day.

President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The process was interrupted on March 30 ahead of the so-called ``elections``.

[02] MINISTER OF DEFENCE EU COUNCIL

EU Ministers of Defence discussed a series of issues in Luxembourg, in the framework of the Foreign Affairs Council, in which Cyprus was represented by Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas.

In the framework of the meeting of the European Defence Agency board of directors, the Ministers discussed the activities of the agency for the years 2011-2013, the European Framework Cooperation, the study regarding maritime surveillance, the programme to tackle improvised explosive devices, as well as the study on defence issues.

They also discussed the common maritime policy, the use of military means to tackle rapidly natural disasters, and the situation in Haiti.
