The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem, resumed its meeting, on Monday afternoon, after a break for lunch.

During their three-day meeting, which began on Monday morning, the members of the National Council will hold a broad discussion on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem and the prospects for a settlement.

The new National Council meeting comes in the wake of the ``election`` of Dervis Eroglu as the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, in statements one day after the ``presidential elections`` in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, spoke of a ``bad development.``

``Taking into consideration Eroglus declared positions against a federation and for the establishment of two independent states in Cyprus, this could cause very serious problems to the Cyprus negotiations,`` Stephanou added.

President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on September 2008 UN-led talks for a mutually agreed settlement to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The process was interrupted on March 30 ahead of the so-called ``elections.``
