  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - DIRECT TALKS

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has expressed his concern over the continuation of the direct talks to solve the Cyprus problem. Speaking during Thursdays plenary session of the House, Garoyian called on the international community and particularly the United Nations and the European Union to respect the decision and the will of the Greek Cypriots as expressed in the referendum on 24 April 2004.

On the occasion of the completion of six years since the referendum, House President noted that Greek Cypriots rejected Annan Plan as the basis of the solution of Cyprus problem, not because they dont want a solution to the problem but because they want a solution to be just, functional and viable, something that the plan in question did not ensure. Unfortunately, he added, after six years, the Turkish side remains intransigent and with arrogance and impudence is seeking a solution to the Cyprus problem which in several points is even worse than that of the Annan plan.

Garoyian also said that Turkish side insists on positions that lead to confederation while the proposals which submits at the negotiating table refer to a two state solution of the Cyprus problem. He concluded by saying that such positions are expressed by the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias has been engaged in talks with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community since September 2008.

    [02] PARLIAMENT - MISSING DAY

The House of Representatives, through its President Marios Garogian, has called on the United Nations, the European Union, all the international and national parliamentary institutions to exert their influence on Turkey in order to cooperate in implementing the decisions and resolutions of the United Nations which call for the verification of the fate of the Missing Persons. At the suggestion of Garoyian, House declared October 29 as Missing persons Day`` taking into account the fact that on the previous day, namely 28 October 1974, the last prisoners were set free by the Turks and since then the problem of the Missing Persons and Undeclared Prisoners of the Cyprus tragedy has actually begun.

Speaking during Thursdays plenary session of the House, Garoyian referred to the events which are currently underway to mark the 26th Marathon of Love for Missing Persons to conclude on 25 April. On this occasion, he added, the House of Representatives expresses once again its sympathy, support and solidarity to the relatives of missing persons and it also stresses the need for the full determination of the fate of all Missing Persons.

Turkey has so far refused to provide information about the fate of Greek Cypriot missing persons, who were last seen alive in the hands of the Turkish military during the 1974 Turkish invasion.
