The ash cloud has caused an air travel chaos in Europe and the closure of many European airports.

In his statements, Hermes Airports Communications and Public Relations Director Adamos Aspris said that from Saturday midnight until three o clock Saturday afternoon, 22 flights to and from Larnaka International Airport from and to the airports of Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Newcastle, Manchester, Prague, Budapest, Munich, Zurich, Paris, Warsaw, Amsterdam and Pergamo of Italy were cancelled. Fourteen of these flights were outgoing and the remaining eight incoming.

As regards Paphos International Airport, Aspris said nine flights from and to the airports of Birmingham, Luton, Gatwick, Manchester and Denmark were cancelled. Five of these flights were outgoing and the rest four incoming.

With regard to Cyprus Airways flights, CA Spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou told CNA that more than ten CA flights to and from Cyprus were cancelled on Saturday.

Kyriakou said that four flights to and from London Heathrow, two flights to and from Paris, Larnaka-Paphos-Manchester and Manchester-Paphos-Larnaka flights and flights to and from Amsterdam, to and from Moscow and to and from Zurich were cancelled.

Cyprus Airways Spokesman said that the flight from Larnaka to Rome and from Rome to Larnaka was not cancelled, but CY flight from Rome to Milan and from Milan to Rome was cancelled.

The situation is very difficult because the number of flights which are being cancelled is increasing, he told CNA. We are following and evaluating the situation, and we are planning our next steps, he concluded.

[02] ARCHBISHOP CONSTANTINOPLE CANCELLATION

The Archbhishop visited Brussels earlier this week where he addressed a Seminar and had meetings with European officials. He was sheculed to fly from Brussels to Constantinople on Friday for an official visit to the Ecumanical Patriarchate.
