[01] EU GROUP ON CYPRUS - MEETING

An announcement said that the group discussed the result of the continued intercommunal talks and closely examined the issues of a future settlement that are related with the EU.

The group was informed on the latest developments by Leopold Maurer, Barrosos personal Representative to the UN Good Offices Mission in Cyprus.

It said the general view is that there has been significant progress by the leaders of the two communities, Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

The announcement reminds that Barroso, in his statement on 30th March, had welcomed the level of commitment and responsibility of the two leaders and repeated the full support of the Commission to the efforts of the two leaders to achieve a solution the soonest.

The group was set up by the President of the Commission in January 2009 as a way to support the talks and to coordinate the positions on issues which are related to the acqui.

Within this framework, Barroso positioned Maurer as his personal Representative in October 2009 following a request by the United Nations.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
