[01] EPP GROUP PRESIDENT - CYPRUS ARCHBISHOPThe destruction of the cultural heritage in Cyprus nothern Turkish occupied areas and the Cyprus problem were the focus of a meeting Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II had on Tuesday in Brussels with Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Joseph Daul.Daul stressed the need to protect the cultural heritage, noting that churches and other holy sites in the occupied areas have been pillaged and are in a bad condition, some have even been destroyed. We all agree that the people of Cyprus must live together as they have done in the past, he said, adding that the Cyprus problem must be solved before any discussion for Turkeys accession to the EU. On his part, Chrysostomos said that he had the chance during their meeting to elaborate on the destruction of monuments in the occupied areas. We are very much concerned about this and that is why we have contacted the Turkish Prime Minister,» he added. The Archbishop asked for Dauls intervention on this issue, and thanked him for his support. He also discussed with him the issue of attempts to introduce direct trade between the EU with Cyprus Turkish occupied areas, noting that what Turkish Cypriot are seeking is not commercial exchanges but recognition of the self-styled regime they have set up in this part of the Republic, which no other country except Turkey recognises. On Wednesday the Archbishop will address the official opening of a seminar entitled Religious Freedom and Holy Sites in the Republic of Cyprus, organized by the Representation of the Church of Cyprus to the EU, in cooperation with the Church and the Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches. The seminar will be held at the European Parliament under the high patronage of Hans-Gerg Pottering and will be hosted by Cypriot MEP Eleni Theocharous. [02] TRIO EU PRESIDENCY - CYPRUS - MEETINGSA two-day series of formal meetings between senior officials from Poland, Denmark and Cyprus will be held in Ayia Napa coastal resort, in Cyprus, on April 15 and 16, in view of their countries` trio presidency of the EU, during the second half of 2011 and the whole of 2012.The meetings will begin with a workshop on drafting the 18-month programme of the presidency. The workshop will include presentations by a representative of the Council`s Secretariat, as well as a representative of the Hungarian government, who will convey his country`s experience in drafting the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian trio presidency. [03] INTERIOR MINISTER - BENEFICIARIES OF INTERNATIONAL PROTECTIONCyprus begins an information campaign to raise awareness about the beneficiaries of international protection, who live in Cyprus.Speaking at a press conference on the presentation of the campaign, Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said that in Cyprus there are 270 cases with refugee status, 2,030 with subsidiary protection and 175 with humanitarian status. Noting that Cyprus geographical location is close to a politically unstable region, he said that in our area there are ideal conditions for the production of political refugees. [04] CROATIAN MPs - VISIT TO CYPRUSDeputy Speaker of the Croatian Parliament and Chairman of the European Integration Committee Neven Mimica will be arriving in Cyprus on April 18, accompanied by members of the Committee, for a three-day visit.According to the draft programme for the visit, Mimica will be welcomed at Larnaca Airport by Chairman of the House Standing Committee on European Affairs Nicos Cleanthous.
