  • [01] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS SOLUTION

The solution will be painful but at the end it will heal wounds even when the solution is functional, viable and just - under the circumstances - President Demetris Christofias said here today, adding that he is working towards this goal.

Addressing his wishes to the staff of the Presidential Palace for the Greek Orthodox Easter, to be celebrated on Sunday, President Christofias stressed that ``we must not leave Cyprus crucified for ever and this is what we should keep in mind``.

President Christofias sent a message of love to the Turkish Cypriots, saying they too are citizens of the Cyprus Republic and will be the future citizens of the united federal Cyprus Republic.

The President said that we look forward to the time when Bayram and Easter will be celebrated both by Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

``The division in the souls of people is worse than the division on the ceasefire line``, he pointed out.

He assured that the Cyprus government is working very hard to reunite the island with a respectable solution which will take into consideration the interests of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

    [02] BUZEK - JOINT STATEMENT

President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek has welcomed the joint statement of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, regarding their talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

``The settlement of the Cyprus issue is very important for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and for the European Union as a whole. Despite the considerable challenges posed by the talks, I praise the commitment, courage and determination shown in the negotiations. This is a `win-win` situation. I encourage both parties to continue and go ahead with the process after the upcoming elections,`` Buzek says in a statement.

He adds that ``the settlement of the Cyprus question will bring greater stability, prosperity and security to the Eastern Mediterranean.``

    [03] LAWYER - ORAMS APPEAL

The British Supreme Court rejected Wednesday a petition by British citizens Linda and David Orams to file an appeal against the ruling of the British Court of Appeal in the case of Apostolides vs Orams.

In January, the British Court of Appeal ruled that the Orams must execute a judgment by a Cypriot court, which said that they must demolish the house they illegally built in the land of Greek Cypriot Meletis Apostolides in the northern Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus and deliver the property to its legal owner.

In statements to CNA, Lawyer of Greek Cypriot refugee Meletis Apostolides, Constantis Kantounas underscored the importance of Wednesday`s decision, saying that this is the end of the road.

He also expressed the view that the ruling proves that similar cases like the Apostolides case are not influenced in any way by the recent decision of the European Court of Humans Rights (ECHR), which said that a self-styled immovable property commission in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus constitutes an effective domestic remedy which Greek Cypriots must exhaust before resorting to the ECHR.

    [04] CYPRUS - EU PRESIDENCY

Head of the Secretariat of the Cyprus EU Presidency Andreas Moleskis has expressed certainty that Cyprus, ``despite being a small island, will rise to the challenge`` of holding the EU rotating presidency in the second half of 2012.

In a welcoming speech at the Seminar on ``EU Presidency: The Slovenian Experience``, held in Nicosia, Moleskis said that, ``in spite of everything, what our public service lacks in size, I strongly believe that it possesses in quality.``

``A proof of our determination and ambition to carry out a successful EU presidency stems, after all, from the positive response and full participation in this seminar by all the Ministries and Working Groups involved in the preparations for the Cyprus EU presidency,`` he added.

Moleskis said it was in Cyprus` ``best interests to make the most out of the Slovenian experience on presidency issues, given our similar size,`` adding that ``our common aim is to ensure that Cyprus` first EU presidency lives up to the expectations that the role demands.``
