    Ôhe President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias arrived on Wednesday in Brussels to take part in the Spring European Øouncil to be held on March 25 and 26.

    During the Council, the leaders of the European Union are expected to agree on the general framework of the Union`s new strategy for jobs and growth, namely EU2020 strategy.

    They will also review the efforts undertaken by the European Union and its member states in order to address the current financial crisis.

    The European Council will also hold a preliminary discussion on the preparation of the G20 summit. In addition, the Council will assess the state of work regarding the follow-up to the Copenhagen Conference on climate change.

    [02] PRESIDENTIAL CVOMMISSIONER - JOINT STATEMENT - LIMNITIS

    Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou said on Thursday that the possibility of issuing a joint statement by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat would be discussed during their next meeting, on March 30, in the context of talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

    He also said that the matter would also be on the agenda of the next National Council, top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, on April 7.

    To questions concerning the Limnitis crossing point, Iacovou said all documents have been signed and the project should be completed within four months.

    Asked if President Christofias and Talat would be present when the works begin on March 29, Iacovou said he would be meeting the UN later on Thursday and any decisions would be announced.

    Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou met on Wednesday at the US Congress with the Chairman and members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives.

    He also spoke at the Council of Foreign Relations in Washington, addressing an audience of analysts, academics, diplomats and journalists on the recent developments in the Cyprus problem.

    In his speech, Kyprianou noted that the United States and the international community could contribute to efforts for a Cyprus settlement, by encouraging Turkey, which is the key to a solution, to play a positive role in a solution.

    He also referred to the issue of Famagusta, which has been fenced-off since 1974, as well as the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetri Christofia for experts to enter the town and begin reconstruction studies.

    Speaking on Voice of America, Kyprianou said that during his meeting with the Chairman and members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs he referred to the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, as well as the positions of the government.

    On Friday, Kyprianou is scheduled to meet Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

    Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
