[01] ARCHBISHOP - MONASTERYArchbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II crossed to the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus, to visit the holy monastery of Apostle Andreas, located in the Karpass Peninsula, on the northeastern tip of the island. This is the first time the Archbishop has crossed into the occupied areas since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The Archbishop, accompanied by the bishop of Karpasia Christoforos, crossed the dividing line from Saint Dometios crossing point without stopping for any ``formalities``. During his stay in the occupied areas, his car is escorted by a vehicle of the so-called police of the occupation regime. Chrysostomos` first stop was the Holy Monastery of Apostle Varanvas, where he visited the tomb of Varnavas, the founder of the autocephalous Church of Cyprus. He expressed hope for the speedy reunification of the island. The Archbishop was met at the Church by the self-styled minister of tourism Ersan Saner. In a brief discussion, the Archbishop recalled that during his childhood he used to play with Turkish Cypriots from a nearby village. ``We hope those days, when we got along just fine and had fun, will return,`` he remarked, to which Caner replied: ``we all need it. We all need a peaceful island.`` Caner said that older people, among whom his father and grandfather, spoke Greek fluently whereas young Turkish Cypriots do not due to the lack of contact with Greek Cypriots. The Archbishop will visit the church of Saint Triada, in Rizokarpaso and the holy monastery of Apostle Andreas. [02] EU - TURKEY - RELATIONSThe Council of the European Union believes that Turkey should be committed seriously to relations of good neighbourliness and to the peaceful settlement of disputes, since relations of good neighbourliness is one of the issues that will be taken into consideration in Turkeys accession negotiations. This position is included in a reply of the EU Council to a question by Greek New Democracy Euro MP Marietta Giannakou, as regards violations by Turkish fighters of Athens FIR. In its reply, the Council notes that it is aware of the problem and points out that Turkey, an EU candidate state, should accept the principles and goals of the EU, as defined by the various conventions. The Council notes that the outright commitment to relations of good neighborliness as well as commitment to peaceful settlement of disputes has great significance and is a long-term priority in the reviewed partnership for accession.
