  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - PAPANDREOU - MEETING

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou will be having a very useful exchange of views on Friday, during a crucial period for the Cyprus problem, Spokesman for the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Gregoris Delavekouras said on Thursday.

The Spokesman reiterated the Greek government`s support to President Christofias` efforts to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, and expressed hope that progress will be made.

Delavekouras noted that talks between President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat for a Cyprus settlement were progressing and that it would be useful for Greece to have a clear picture of developments.

Commenting on the latest ruling by the European Court of Human Rights concerning the ``immovable property commission`` in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Delavekouras said the Cyprus problem remains one of invasion and occupation, and pointed out that the consequences and responsibilities burden Turkey.

Delavekouras said the Court issued a ruling, which acknowledges Turkey`s responsibility, adding that a solution of the Cyprus problem would solve the property issue.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunify the island.

The ECHR, in Strasbourg, said that the self-styled immovable property commission set up in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus is an effective domestic remedy as far as property claims are concerned, and urged Greek Cypriots to address their claims to the IPC. It also said that Greek Cypriots must first exhaust all domestic remedies before resorting to the ECHR, including applying to the so-called high administrative court in the occupied areas of Cyprus, if the commission`s remedy is not to their satisfaction.

President Christofias has urged Greek Cypriots not to resort to the IPC, saying this would not solve either the problems it is set up to tackle, or the question of Cyprus.
