    [02] PARTIES - LEDRA MEETING

Leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, who held here today one of their regular meetings, discussed the issue of Party politics or country politics, as proposed by the host party the United Democrats.

In their joint communique, read out after the meeting by Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Turenicova, they agreed that Cyprus finds itself today at a crossroads of critical and defining moments in its recent history.

They also agreed that this is not the time for intra-party or inter-party politics and that this is the time to open currently uncharted yet promising ways for the Cypriots and their neighbours in eastern Mediterranean, it added.

The parties expressed their support to the leaders of the two communities in their effort for a timely agreement on the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of the agreed framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as this is defined in the relevant Security Council resolutions.

    [03] FINANCE MINISTER - ECONOMY

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said on Wednesday that if the right fiscal measures were taken now, the growth and prosperity of the economy would be secured for many years.

Addressing the annual congress of the civil servants` union, Stavrakis referred to the global financial crisis, which has adversely affected Cyprus, noting that the government has followed the best fiscal and social policy, which has minimised the adverse effects of the crisis.

He noted that ``we have announced and implemented two successive packages of measures to support the real economy, exceeding 400 million EUR or 2% of the GDP, addressing sectors that have been affected the most.``

Stavrakis said that, despite pressure, social cohesion has been enhanced, adding that over the past two years increased social benefits worth 300 million EUR have been granted, while efforts are still being made to correct various structural problems.
