President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said he is committed to working very hard for a solution of the Cyprus problem, pledging to seek what is feasible and not what is desired.

Addressing an event, on Monday evening to mark the 60th anniversary since the foundation of the Neocleous Lyceum, President Christofias, a graduate of the Lyceum, expressed the wish that a political settlement can be achieved during his term in office.

President Christofias pledged to do his utmost to achieve "the feasible and prevent the continuation of chasing the desirable, which, as he pointed out, "has led us from bad to worse".

The goals of the desirable outcome are noble but the desirable solution has proven a lot of times to be not feasible, he noted.

He expressed the wish that one day Cyprus will be reunified, on the basis of principles.

I wish that one day we can live with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots without any occupation or foreign interventions, he went on to add.

I sincerely wish and hope that before the end of my term in office I will manage to reunify our country and our people, he concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Christofias was elected President in February 2008 and has another three years to serve before his term in office ends. He has been engaged in talks with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat to find a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.
