  • [01] GAROYIAN CYPRUS PROBLEM

If a real opportunity to achieve a just, functional and viable solution to the Cyprus problem is found in the direct negotiations between the leaders of the two communities then certainly, it should not to be missed, President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has stressed.

Speaking during a memorial service for Christos Tsiartas who was killed in the 1955-59 EOKA struggle against British colonial rule, Garoyian said, inter alia, that ``we very well know that the road to find a just and viable solution is not easy. It has never been.

He said that the Greek Cypriot side has always encountered and will continue to encounter difficulties and problems, adding that we will always confront the Turkish intransigence and arrogance, Turkish partition plans as well as the subdued attitude of the international community towards Turkeys demands.

Garoyian called on the United Nations, the international community and all those who have the means to exert their influence on Turkey to think, behave and act on the basis of the principles of law, human rights and the EU principles and values, cease their impassive behaviour and support the rights of an independent and sovereign state.

    [02] GERMANY ART EXHIBITION CYPRUS

An archaeological exhibition entitled ``Cyprus - Island of Aphrodite`` opened in the Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum in the town of Hildesheim in Germany, under the joint aegis of President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Over 200 outstanding objects are on display from Cypriot and other European Museums, bringing to life the diverse history of legendary birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite.

According to an official press release, the opening ceremony was held by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Germany Pantias Eliades and the Mayor of Hildesheim, Kurt Machens.

The Exhibition is held in the framework of celebrations for the 1000th anniversary of the magnificent church of Saint Michael in Hildesheim, which is considered an example of medieval architecture and is included in the UNESCO`S list of world cultural heritage.

In his address Ambassador Eliades said the exhibition is also part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Cyprus` independence which, as he added, remind us of our duty to achieve a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.
