  • [01] POLICE - BODY - TASSOS PAPADOPOULOS

Cyprus Police have said that a body found in a Nicosia cemetery is likely to belong to former President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA that acting on information that we have received, a body was found at a Nicosia cemetery. Preliminary indication shows that it is likely to belong to former president Tassos Papadopoulos``.

He added that DNA tests will be carried out to ascertain that the body is indeed that of Papadopoulos.

Police high-ranking officials and Papadopoulos family members went to the cemetery. They left late in the evening, while police officers continue investigations there.

On December 10, unknown persons violated the grave of Tassos Papadopoulos, who passed away last year, and removed the body, leaving only an empty coffin.

[02] GREEK PM - US SECRETARY OF STATE - CYPRUS PROBLEM

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has reiterated US support to the ongoing process aiming to solve the Cyprus problem and commended Cyprus leaders ``on their hard work in the intensive talks and for the progress made in their meetings.``

In statements after a meeting with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, Clinton said she was able to discuss with Papandreou his continued efforts to strengthen Greeces relations with Turkey.

[03] ATTORNEY GENERAL - ECHR DECISION

Cyprus Attorney General Petros Clerides has described as a negative development a decision by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which recognises the self-styled immovable property commission (IPC), in Turkish occupied Cyprus, from a legal point of view as well as from a political one.

The European Court (ECHR), in Strasbourg, said that the IPC is an effective domestic remedy as far as property claims are concerned, and that Greek Cypriots must first exhaust all domestic remedies before resorting to the ECHR, including the so-called high administrative court in the occupied areas.

Clerides said that it is a frustrating decision because it is not compatible with the justice that was expected from that Court, bearing in mind its previous case-law.

[04] EIB - CENTRAL COOPERATIVE BANK - AGREEMENT

Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Ploutarchos Sakellaris and Director General of the Central Cooperative Bank Erotokritos Chlorakiotis have signed a Convention for the allocation of a 50 million euro grant of the EIB to the Cooperative Central Bank for the financing of SMEs in Cyprus, on favorable terms and competitive interest rates, with a view to boost the island`s economy.

Speaking during a press conference, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said that ``the government is constantly trying to use opportunities for competitive financing from foreign banks to boost liquidity and the development of the Cypriot economy``, adding that targeted EIB programmes give the opportunity to SMEs to borrow money under very competitive terms.
