  • [01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS TALKS

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou pointed out on Wednesday that the outcome of the talks to solve the Cyprus problem did not depend on the time allocated to them for convergences and progress, or on the frequency of the meetings, but on the positions submitted at the negotiating table.

Speaking after a Cabinet meeting and replying to questions, Stephanou said that the schedule of the meetings has been agreed and that there would be four day-long meetings, adding that the Greek Cypriot side had already made preparations so that it is ready for the meetings and so that ``these meetings produce a result.``

He also said that the Greek Cypriot side was constructive and submitted positions that were based on the aim for a bizonal bicommunal federation, and that convergences depended on the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side.

Commenting on allegations voiced by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the Greek Cypriot side was intransigent, Stephanou said that it was obvious that Turkey was trying to present the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot side as the intransigent side at the negotiating table.

He pointed out that the stance of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias dismissed the Turkish allegation that the Greek Cypriot side was intransigent, and that ``the international community, the UN and the EU admit and acknowledge that the President of the Republic is engaged in the negotiations with goodwill.``

Commenting on a position expressed by Erdogan for a summit of all involved parties, Stephanou said that the Greek Cypriot side`s position was well known and called on the Turkish Prime Minister to listen to Europe and the international community, and cooperate, on the basis of UN resolutions, for a Cyprus settlement.

He added that the government was making yet another effort, concerning the international community, which should urge Turkey to comply with the European Parliament`s latest resolution, and the European Council`s conclusions of December 2009.

    [02] CYPRUS - DEPARTMENT - CUT

The government of the Republic of Cyprus has decided to establish a Department of Rehabilitation Science at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). The decision was taken during Wednesday`s meeting of the Cabinet.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou stated that the Cabinet decided the establishment of a Department of Rehabilitation Science at the Cyprus University of Technology, which will offer four degrees: in Logotherapy, in Ergotherapy, in Physiotherapy and a degree in Social Services.

Demetriou said that the University of Technology will immediately begin the process for hiring staff for the Department. He added that the Department will be ready to receive the first students in the academic year of 2012.

    [03] CYPRUS - TRADE DEFICIT

Cyprus` trade deficit reached 4.3 billion EUR in the first eleven months of 2009, reduced by 1.4 bln EUR, compared to the corresponding period of 2008, figures released by Eurostat on Wednesday show.

According to Eurostat first estimates, Cyprus total imports reached 800 million EUR, marking a 20% decrease compared with the first eleven months of 2008. Cyprus` total imports decreased by 24%, reaching 5.1 bln EUR.

    [04] GOVERNMENT DATA WAREHOUSE

The Council of Ministers approved on Wednesday the creation of a Government Data Warehouse.

As Government Spokesman, Stefanos Stefanou, said after a Cabinet meeting it is an online site featuring all necessary infrastructure for the exchange of information and the interrelation of data between the states various information systems.

The creation of this Data Warehouse is now possible as computerization of the Civil Service has been completed, he added.

The Spokesman stressed that the first stage of the project consisting of two phases - will be completed in approximately 30 months. The Warehouse will function as a data base and will provide the possibility for research through various keys and analyse various data from the Ministries and other sites so that the user can recall any time the information he needs.
