[01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - INTENSIVE TALKSThe leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Ali Talat, continue here Tuesday their discussions on governance and power sharing, as part of their effort to find a negotiated settlement.As President Christofias pointed out after Mondays lengthy meeting with Talat, the objective is not to terminate the talks but to find a solution that will reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. We are making a genuine attempt to find convergences on the issue of governance and power sharing. This is not an easy task, nonetheless it is not a vain effort either and we shall continue on Tuesday, the President said in his remarks. Speaking after Monday`s meeting, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that ``the two leaders met most of the day in a tete-a-tete session and they have authorised me to say that they had a very friendly meeting or series of meetings.`` ``They have had a very significant exchange of ideas. On Tuesday morning they will be meeting again in a plenary session and they will be discussing these ideas more broadly with the plenary group,`` he added. [02] UN TOP ENVOY - CYPRUS TALKSThe leaders of the two communities in Cyprus focused on governance and power sharing during their meeting on Monday, and had a ``very significant`` exchange of ideas, in the context of intensive talks to solve the Cyprus problem. Speaking after Monday`s meeting, the UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said ``the two leaders met most of today in a tete-a-tete session and they have authorised me to say that they had a very friendly meeting or series of meetings.````They have had a very significant exchange of ideas. On Tuesday morning they will be meeting again in a plenary session and they will be discussing these ideas more broadly with the plenary group,`` he added. Replying to questions, Downer said ``they focused predominantly on governance and power sharing issues`` and that ``they spent some time talking about the broader issue of the negotiations.`` He added that by the time the leaders finish this intensive phase on Wednesday ``there will be of course more to say then and more clarity will be provided.`` Asked about a possible visit to Cyprus by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Downer said ``visits by the Secretary General are announced when New York makes final decisions and at this stage no final decision has been made.`` [03] CHRISTOFIAS CYPRUS ISSUE TALKSPresident Demetris Christofias has stressed that his goal is to see the ongoing UN-led negotiations succeed and get closer to a political settlement in Cyprus.Our objective is not to end the negotiations, President Christofias stressed here today, pointing out that the target should be the successful outcome of the negotiations and getting closer to a solution of the Cyprus problem.
