  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - US PRESIDENT - ENVOY

The Republic of Cyprus will welcome the appointment of a special envoy by US President Barack Obama, President Demetris Christofias has said.

If Mr. Obama decides to appoint a special representative he will be most welcomed. Provided that the US policy will respect the Republic of Cyprus and will contribute to a just and viable settlement we will welcome such a representative, he added. He also noted that members of the Greek American leadership in the US have already discussed this issue with President Obamas aides.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
