Speaker of the British Parliament John Bercow has pledged to make every possible effort to attend the European Speakers Conference in June, which will take part in Cyprus.

Speaking after a meeting at the House of Commons with Cypriot House President Marios Garoyian, Bercow said it was a pleasure and a privilege for me to meet Mr President, my opposite number as Speaker of his Parliament, noting they enjoyed their meeting and struck up a good relationship.

We are of similar age; each of us has been in post as Speaker for a fairly short time. As the President very kindly reiterated the invitation to me to attend the European Speakers Conference in June this year and I very much hope that I will be able and intend to be able, if humanly possible, to be present to that important event, said Bercow.

Earlier, Garoyian met Shadow Minister for Europe Mark Fransois in the presence of Shadow Minister of Transport Theresa Villiers and MP Roger Gale. In a statement, Fransois said he will continue to take an interest in Cyprus and he hoped a conservative Government would continue to take this interest and be in a position one day to help bringing about a lasting settlement, which would benefit both communities.
