  • [01] GREECE - INAUGURATION - ARTEMIDA ESTATE

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou inaugurated the estate of Artemida of Ilia Prefecutre in Peloponisos, which suffered extensive damage during the devastating fires in the summer of 2007 in Greece.

The estate was reconstructed with funds provided by the Cypriot government.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, President Christofias said he was profoundly moved by his presence in Artemida, noting that as Greece traditionally supports the struggles of the Cypriot people, Cyprus supports Hellenism during its difficult moments.

The Greek Premier expressed gratitude to the Republic of Cyprus and the people of Cyprus, adding that ``today Cypriots prove that they are our brothers.``

Addressing President Christofias, Papandreou reiterated that Greece and the Greek government warmly support his efforts to find a just, viable and functional solution, which would reunify the island to the benefit of the Cypriot people and would terminate the Turkish occupation of Cyprus.

President Christofias and Premier Papandreou revealed a plaque located in the estate`s central square, which has been named ``Square of Cyprus`` to honour Cyprus` contribution to the reconstruction of the fire-devastated estate.

The ceremony was attended by Cypriot officials, among who were Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiots, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Cyprus` Ambassador to Greece Ioseph Ioseph.

From the Greek side, the ceremony was attended by the four Greek MP`s elected in Ilia Prefecture, Prefect of Ilia Charalambos Kafyras, Head of the Western Greece Region Tasos Apostolopoulos, Bishop of Olympia and Tryfilia Chrysostomos, Mayor of Zacharo Pantazis Chronopoulos and President of Artemida`s community council Giorgos Kossyfas.

After the ceremony, President Christofias left for Athens, where on Monday he will hold meetings and talks with the Greek government.
