  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL - INTENSIVE NEGOTIATIONS

Cyprus National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, discussed Friday about the first round of the intensive talks on the Cyprus problem held January 11, 12 and 13 in view of the second round to be held on January 25, 26 and 27.

A joint communique read out after the meeting by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that President Christofias informed the members of the Council about the first round of the talks and handed over to them the document he submitted during the negotiations concerning the chapter of governance.

The spokesman noted that Christofias informed the members of the Council that the Greek Cypriot side will submit during the second round of the talks its overall proposals on economy, European issues and the issue of property.

He added that the parties reiterated during the meeting their well-known positions on various issues.

Replying to questions, Stephanou said that the government will continue its campaign to inform the international community about the positions of the Greek Cypriot side, the context of the settlement, the UN resolutions, the efforts made to solve the problem and the response or non-response there is in this effort.

He also said that there have been various proposals at the National Council for coordination between Cyprus and Greece, which is necessary in the efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

Invited to comment on the position of some of the political parties that President Christofias must withdraw the proposals he has submitted to the negotiations, he said that it is not right to withdraw positions as long as the negotiations are under way.

As regards the positions of the Greek Cypriots side about the rotating presidency, he said that this is a proposal that overcomes problems of the past.

He also said that the comprehensive proposals to be tabled by Cyprus President during the second round of the intensive negotiations do not constitute something new but are the proposals submitted by the Greek Cypriot side during the course of the negotiations on economy, European issues and the issue of property.

He said that Christofias will submit these documents to the parties, waiting for their remarks, despite the fact that they maintain these positions for a long time.

[02] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - ATHENS - WORKING VISIT

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias will fly to Greece on Saturday for a working visit, talks with Prime Minister George Papandreou and the ceremony to hand over the estate of Artemida, which was rebuilt at the expense of the Cypriot government after the village was completely destroyed in the 2007 Greekforest fires.

According to the programme of the visit, President Christofias will be meeting with President of the Hellenic Republic Carolos Papoulias on Saturday, shortly after arriving in Greece.

On Sunday, President Christofias and Papandreou will be holding a meeting with the local authorities of Artemida, followed by the ceremony to hand over the estate, which officials of Artemida, President Christofias and Papandreou will be addressing.

UN Official: High expectations for a Cyprus settlement

There are high expectations here in Cyprus and internationally that a settlement acceptable to both communities can finally be reached, said here Friday, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cyprus and Chief of Mission Tayie Brook Zerihoun.

Addressing the Fifth Annual Session of the Mediterranean Model United Nations (MEDIMUN) in Nicosia, Zerihoun said ``the two leaders have shown great commitment and determination to the peace effort despite considerable challenges and criticism of the process``.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he added, has commended the leaders on several occasions for their effort and for the progress achieved so far.

``As is the case in all negotiations, if the process is to be successful the two sides must demonstrate flexibility and accommodate each others concerns to the extent possible``, he stressed.

    [03] BAGHDATIS - ``MEDIBAND INTERNATIONAL`` FINAL

Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis booked his place in the final of the Medibank International Sydney with a tremendous three-set victory battle with American Mardy Fish.

Baghdatis prevailed 6-4 6-7 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) against the big-serving Fish in an arm wrestle of a match that lasted a little under three hours.
