  • [01] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS TALKS

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias said on Tuesday that he and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat continued the open discussion on the chapter of governance, in the context of intensive talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

He also said that he submitted a document with the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the issue.

Speaking on his return to the Presidential Palace after the end of Tuesday`s meeting with Talat, at the residence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Tayie Brook Zerihoun, President Christofias said ``the open discussion on governance continued.``

Asked if the Greek Cypriot side had submitted anything in writing, President Christofias said ``of course, I submitted our document, in writing, with the positions of the Greek Cypriot side, on the issue of governance.``

``We will continue the discussion tomorrow,`` he said, adding that ``because, as you understand, we said we will not discuss the Turkish Cypriot document, it is not necessary to discuss the positions of our document.``

He added that ``we have the positions of the two sides in mind and we are discussing freely, having these positions in mind.``

    [02] FULE - ANKARA PROTOCOL

EU Commissioner designate for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, Stefan Fule, has said that if his candidacy is approved by the European Parliament, he will ask Turkey to implement the Ankara Protocol.

Fule, who was replying to questions by MEPs during his hearing before the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, stressed that Turkey must implement the Protocol which provides for the opening of its ports and airports to Cypriot vessel and aircraft.

The Czech Commissioner designate noted that the EU has repeatedly expressed its discontent about Turkeys refusal to comply with the terms of the Protocol.

``I will do all I can to make absolutely clear to Turkey that it has to implement that Protocol and I will report to you at the end of this year``, he told a hearing in the European Parliament.

He pointed out that Turkey has to show the necessary credibility and fulfill the EU obligations it has undertaken.

    [03] ISRAELI FM - VISIT

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, Avigdor Lieberman, will pay Cyprus an official visit between 13-14 January.

According to the programme of his visit, the Israeli official will have Wednesday morning a tete-a-tete meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Marcos Kyprianou, followed by official talks and statements to the press.

Lieberman is also expected to be received by President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias.

During his visit here, the Israeli FM will meet Minister of Communication and Works Nikos Nikolaides with whom he will sign an agreement on merchant shipping.

    [04] HADJICOSTIS - MURDER

Andy Hadjicostis, managing director of the DIAS media group, which includes Sigma TV, was murdered Monday evening in Nicosia.

Hadjicostis, 42, was getting out of his car at around 20:45 when a man wearing a helmet shot him twice with a shotgun at close range. The gunman then escaped on a powerful motorcycle driven by another man.

Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told CNA that Hadjicostis had been ambushed outside his home in Engomi in close proximity to the US Embassy.

The scene of the crime is still cordoned off and is being examined by forensic experts.
