  • [01] EUROPEAN LEFT - CYPRUS QUESTION

The question of Cyprus is one of the unsolved problems in Europe and the European Left will do what they can to help its resolution, the President of the Party of the European Left at the European Parliament, Lothar Bisky, said.

Speaking after his meeting with General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, Bisky said, in a thinly veiled reference to Turkey whose troops continue to occupy Cyprus northern areas, that he cannot understand the blockade of some NATO members to the solution, which will reunite Cyprus.

He also said that his group at the EP is very active in its support for the solution process.

The presence of the Turkish army in Cyprus is bad, they have to go back, he pointed out.

The British army is here and I asked why. I cant explain it to Germany; the people cannot believe that there are Turkish and British armies in Cyprus, he said. Bisky expressed his support to AKEL and to Cyprus President Demetris Christofias who has good proposals to help to the solution of Cyprus problem, as he noted.

He expressed the wish that Januarys intensive talks between the leaders of the two communities will lead to a solution. This would be a very good thing for Europe, he added.

We have to solve the problem of Cyprus and we have to solve the problem of the Near East, he said.

He also said that there is very good cooperation with the two MPs from AKEL in the Leftist Group at the European Parliament.

AKEL General Secretary said that the Party of the European Left at the European Parliament supports the struggle of the people of Cyprus for reunification with consistency.

This, he noted, is very important, adding that they discussed the Cyprus problem and bilateral issues.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Peace talks are currently underway between President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.
