  • [01] PRESIDENT ENCLAVED PERSONS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has expressed his admiration for the Greek Cypriots enclaved in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the island, for keeping the area alive in aggravating circumstances and under occupation.

In a message read out by the Director of the President`s office Vassos Georgiou, during Christmas celebrations organised by the school in Rizokarpaso, President Christofias noted that a few hundred Greek Cypriot citizens of the village have been living through trials and hardships for 35 years, waiting for Cyprus` reunification.

President Christofias assured that he was working for a viable solution of the Cyprus problem, a bizonal bicommunal federation, with al single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international identity.

``Our will for a solution is granted but I would like to stress once again that we are not ready to accept a solution for the sake of a solution,`` he pointed out, adding that ``the solution cannot be the result of enforcement by Turkey or others, it cannot go against the will and the interests of our people as a whole.``

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus have been engaged in UN-led direct talks since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island.

    [02] GOVERNMENT UNFICYP RESOLUTION

The government of the Republic of Cyprus has welcomed the adoption of UNSC Resolution 1898 (2009) for the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) for six more months.

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou told reporters Tuesday that the government considers the Resolution to be a balanced one, since it reaffirms all previous UNSC resolutions, especially Resolution 1251, which describes the framework for a solution in Cyprus.

Stephanou said that the Resolution notes that the responsibility for the achievement of an overall and lasting solution lays first and foremost on Cypriots.

It also reaffirms the fundamental role of the UN for helping out the two communities of Cyprus and reaffirms the basis for the solution, which is a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality as defined in the relevant UNSC resolutions, the Spokesman added.

He went on to say that the resolution reaffirms that any new planning regarding UNFICYPs operations is linked with the solution of the Cyprus problem and calls upon the Turkish Cypriot side and the Turkish forces to restore the status quo at Strovilia as it was before the 30th of June, 2000.

[03] RUSSIAN FM UNFICYP - CYPRUS ISSUE

Russia has welcomed the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP in Cyprus (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) and pledged to contribute in every way to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to a press release issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, referring to UNFICYP, the Russian FM expresses its conviction that in conditions of intensive direct talks between the leaders of the Cypriot communities, the maintenance of the mandate of UNFICYP without changes, ensures its stabilization role and facilitates the promotion of a Cypriot settlement.

Russia will make all necessary efforts, on bilateral and international level for the resolution of the prolonged Cyprus problem, the press release concludes.

[04] PAFOS AIRPORT POLL - FIRST

The International Airport of Pafos was selected by passengers as first among major airports in Europe. According to a press release by Hermes Airports, in a poll held by the large airline Thomson Airways, their passengers ranked Pafos International Airport as first among the major airports of Europe.

The poll concerned all airports in Thomson Airways network during the 2009 summer period. Thomson Airways accounts for more than 25% of the passengers served at Pafos International Airport.

Specifically, Pafos International Airport attracted the highest percentage of positive votes and was chosen as the airport, which leaves the most favorable impression on travelers and at the same time offers exceptional service to the travelling public.

This is the first time that an airport of the Cyprus Republic has occupied such an honoured position and has been awarded Best Resort Airport in Europe by the travelling public, the press release says.
