[01] CYPRUS - GREECE - COORDINATIONMinister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou held a meeting Monday in Athens with Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece Demetris Droutsas with whom he discussed latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue as well as coordination issues ahead of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council.In statements after the meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, the Cypriot Minister said he informed Droutsas about the ongoing UN-led direct negotiations, which are held since September 2008 with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem and reunify Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974. Kyprianou said he also briefed the Greek official on the National Councils (top advisory body to the President of Cyprus on the Cyprus issue) recent meeting and the discussion held there regarding the assessment of Turkeys progress at the December EU Council. In his statements, Droutsas said that between Cyprus and Greece there is a close contact on all issues of mutual concern. He added that during the meeting, they enhanced efforts of coordination ahead of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council that will take place next Monday in Brussels. [02] LEADERS - MEETINGPresident of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet on Tuesday in the framework of the UN-led direct talks for a Cyprus solution, to continue discussion on the subject of aliens, citizenship, immigration and asylum.According to statements by Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun, the two leaders had, during their last meeting on 24 November, a very fruitful discussion on the four subjects. They also agreed to discuss the schedule of the meetings from 3rd of December and beyond and that their representatives will meet on the 2nd and the 4th of December to discuss the issues of economy and property at each of these meetings. [03] POPULATION - INCREASEThe population in the southern government controlled areas of Cyprus recorded a 1% increase in 2008, according to a demographic report issued by the Statistical Service, which gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages, divorces and migration.According to a press release, the population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 796,900 at the end of 2008, compared to 789,300 in the previous year, recording an increase of 1.0%. The population increase in 2008 is mainly explained by an increased natural increase by 4,011 persons and to a lesser extent by the net migration balance of 3,595 persons. [04] E-COMMERCE - PLANThe government has announced a 2.7 million euro plan to promote e-commerce in Cyprus, aiming at financing small and medium size enterprises.Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides has said Monday that the governments Plan to Promote E-commerce includes two different packages according to needs of every SME. The first package concerns economic support for SME to help them establish a website, while the second one aims at enhancing the use of e-commerce.
