PRESIDENT - BRITISH MPs - TURKEY President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has called on members of the British Parliament to exert pressure on Turkey to abandon policies of partition and expansion and cooperate constructively towards a just, functional and viable solution.

The President made the statement during an address at the opening of the Photographic Exhibition Faces of Cyprus by Doros Partasides, at the House of Commons, in London on Wednesday evening.

Assuring that he will continue efforts to put an end to the occupation and to achieve the reunification our country and our people and to do my utmost to turn our peoples hope into a reality, President Christofias turned his attention to the Members of Parliament and said we need your assistance for the smile to blossom on our faces. I urge you to exert pressure on the occupying power to abandon policies of partition and expansion and cooperate constructively towards a just, functional and viable solution.

    [02] DROUTSAS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Alternate Greek Foreign Minister Demetris Droutsas has repeated the Greek position on a solution to the Cyprus issue, which, as he points out, must be within the framework of UN decisions and must respect EU principles and values as well as the acquis communautaire.

He also said that a solution should be European but also Cypriot, in the sense that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots must be allowed to discuss freely their common future as a member state of the EU, without artificial deadlines, external pressure or threats and warnings that this is the last chance for a solution to the Cyprus issue.

Speaking on Wednesday after a meeting with NATO General Secretary, Anders Fogh Rasmussen at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Droutsas referred to the recent meeting between Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou with his Turkish counterpart Tayip Erdogan and said they discussed the UN-led negotiations currently underway for a Cyprus settlement.
