  • [01] DOWNER UNSC CYPRUS

UN Secretary Generals Advisor for Cyprus, Alexander Downer, is expected to visit New York during the first two weeks of December during which he will hold a meeting with UNSG Ban Ki moon to discuss recent developments regarding the Cyprus issue.

According to sources from the UN, Downer will have consultations with the UN team dealing with the Cyprus issue and will inform the UN Security Council about the recent developments regarding the Cyprus issue.

Beginning of December the UN Secretary General is expected to issue two reports on Cyprus. The first concerns the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) which will be issued December 1st and the second report concerns progress achieved regarding the UNSGs good offices in Cyprus, to be published some days later.

According to UN sources, the UNFICYP report will not differ to a great extend from the previous report, despite the fact that a UN team from the peace operations department visited Cyprus to study changes in case of a solution in Cyprus.

The second report will assess positively the progress achieved since September 2008 at the negotiating table for a Cyprus solution and will ascertain that there are different approaches between the two sides.

The report, according to diplomatic sources, will renew its call towards the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, to intensify their meetings, show political boldness and flexibility for achieving an overall solution in Cyprus.

Christofias and Talat began UN-led talks in September 2008 in a bid to achieve a mutually agreed solution to the problem of Cyprus, divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The two leaders have entered the second phase of the talks for the ``second reading`` of the six chapters of the Cyprus problem, namely, governance and power-sharing, property, EU matters, economic matters, territory and security and guarantees.

    [02] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS ISSUE

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that the two sides in Cyprus are very close to an agreement regarding categorisation on the chapter of properties, in the framework of UN led direct negotiations, which began in 2008 with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

In statements on Saturday, Stephanou said that the political parties in Cyprus will be fully informed about the recent developments on the Cyprus issue at Tuesdays meeting of the National Council, the top advisory body to the Cypriot President on the Cyprus problem.

We are very close to an agreement on categorisation, the Spokesman said, adding that categorisation aims to give a complete picture on properties, 35 years after the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus.

Reiterating the position of the Greek Cypriot side on the properties chapter, he said that properties belong to their legal owners, who should have the first say regarding their future.

    [03] GAROYIAN CHILDRENS PARLIAMENT

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has praised the work of the Childrens Parliament, saying that this institution has proved its success by promoting views and demands of children with a view to improve our society.

Addressing Saturday the Cypriot Childrens Parliament, Garoyian said that childrens participation in matters concerning society and politics has helped them set their own goals and have their own dreams and expectations.

As President of the House of Representatives I fully support the institution of Childrens Parliament and I believe that young people today are able to make the Cypriot society even better, he said.

    [04] MINISTER TOURISM POLAND

Current tourist arrivals from Poland can increase dramatically and the government of Cyprus is working hard towards this direction, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides, has said.

Addressing Saturday the Annual Conference of the Polish company of tourist agents, NOWA ITAKA, which took place in Cyprus, the Minister said that the Cyprus government and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation consider Poland an important market for our tourism with great potential.

However, we believe that the current number of tourist arrivals from this market could increase dramatically and we are working hard in this direction. I believe that one of our most valuable partners in this effort is NOWA ITAKA, he said. Referring to the world economic crisis, he said it has definitely had a negative impact in Cyprus tourism industry.
