The property issue was again on the agenda of the meeting between President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat on Friday, in the UN protected area of Nicosia, in the framework of the ongoing UN-led direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

The UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer said that the meeting, which lasted two-and-a-half hours, started with a tete-a-tete meeting of the leaders of the two communities and then moved on a session with the continuation of discussions on the property issue.

The leaders of the two communities will meet again on November 17 to continue the discussion on the same issue and their representatives will also meet during the week.

Downer said that every day they are inching along and noted that Friday`s session was a good opportunity to talk through the issues and continue to work through the property chapter.

Asked if he felt that once the leaders overcome the property issue, things will proceed faster, the UN official said that for every part of the negotiation where there is agreement, the process becomes easier.

To comments that there are other more important issues, he said there are other issues too but pointed out that property is a difficult legal issue and a difficult economic issue. So, it takes time to work through these details, he added.

Downer also said that when the leaders feel satisfied that they have reached a sufficient level of agreement on the property issue, they will move to another chapter.
