  • [01] PARLIAMENT - GAROYIAN - UDI

The House of Representatives once again deplored on Thursday the unilateral declaration of independence of the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas, and reiterated the demand for the retraction of that illegality, as provided for in UN Security Council resolutions and international community calls.

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian said in a speech before the plenary that ``we declare once again that we insist on a just, functional and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, which will terminate the illegality, the occupation and settlers, and will restore and safeguard the rights of Cyprus and its people.``

Garoyian said Friday marks the 26th anniversary of the illegal declaration of the pseudostate in the areas of the Republic of Cyprus under Turkish occupation, which was ``in full contrast with international law.``

He added that the pseudosate was never recognised by the international community and was merely a confirmation of Turkey`s plans.

Garoyian said the Greek Cypriot side was constructively working in the direction of a solution, adding that unfortunately the Turkish side was ``insisting on a confederation and a solution of two states, the legalisation of the consequences of the military invasion and occupation, the legalisation of a crime.``

``We will never accept such a solution because we do not have the will to commit suicide,`` Garoyian added.

    [02] CYPRUS - ONE-STOP SHOP

As from January 2010 investors and businessmen will only need to be in contact with one single point to complete all the required permits in one streamlined coordinated process rather than having to go through different governmental services, Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides said during a panel discussion at the Presentation of the The Doing Business Report 2010.

Paschalides noted that the government of Cyprus has recently decided for the upgrading and expansion of the One-Stop Shop in order to operate as the Point of Single Contact in accordance to the Services Directive, whereby service providers can complete all procedures and formalities needed for access to and exercise of their service activities.

He said that furthermore the newly established Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency is expected to play an important role in attracting foreign direct investments in targeted sectors and promoting Cyprus as a business bridge linking the European Union with the Middle East. CIPA is committed to providing extensive and professional assistance to foreign based companies as well as individuals who wish to investigate the possibility of investing in Cyprus, Paschalides added.

As he stressed, accessing to the European Union and Eurozone while offering a unique basket of comparative advantages, deriving from its strategic geographical location, favourable business climate, fiscal regime, stable macroeconomic environment in conjunction with the modern legal, banking and financing systems, excellent infrastructure as well as the advanced transport and telecommunications network, Cyprus retains and enhances its competitiveness as an international business centre and becomes a stepping stone for investments.

    [03] COMMERCE MINISTER - TOURISM

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides said on Thursday that the year 2010 would be a difficult year for Cyprus` tourism, adding that efforts were being made to increase tourist arrivals from various countries.

Speaking at a press conference, Paschalides said the issue of high airport fees at the new Larnaka Airport would be examined by his Ministry, adding that the aim was ``a high level airport with the lowest possible cost`` and that the Ministry of Commerce and the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) would be looking into the matter.

He added that in 2009 there were more airlines than ever flying to Cyprus and noted that ``we must continue to provide motives and create a relative market.``

Paschalides said efforts were being made to facilitate tourists by solving the problem with visas and flight connections, as well as hotels of various levels and prices. He added that the culture, civilisation and countryside of Cyprus, not only its sun and sea, must be promoted, since many people are interested in that type of tourism.

    [04] POPULATION - FLU SYMPTOMS

Chairwoman of the Ministry of Health Committee for the Management of influenza A (H1N1) Chrystalla Hadjianastasiou said on Thursday that so far less than 2% of the population in Cyprus has come down with flu, noting that symptoms have been fairly mild, with only four cases developing severe respiratory problems, and no fatalities.

Hadjianastasiou, who briefed the House of Parliament Committee on Health on available data concerning influenza A, said that so far, from the beginning of the school year, about 530 students were reported to have lost schooldays due to flu symptoms, a number considered low compared to other European countries.

She told reporters after the Committee meeting that between 15 to 20 teachers were reported on sick leave due to flu symptoms.

Hadjianastasiou said anti-flu vaccinations would begin around November 23 with persons in the high-risk categories of the population.
