  • [01] LEADERS - MEETING

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will hold two consecutive meetings this week in the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) of Nicosia, October 14 and 15.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will be holding a meeting today in the framework of the second round of negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.

Christofias and Talat decided September 2009 to accelerate the pace of their meetings and meet when possible twice a week.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will continue discussion on the chapter concerning governance.

The meetings are held in the framework of UN-led direct negotiations with a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [02] FM - SWEDISH MINISTER - MEETING

The EU Swedish Presidency, represented by Swedish Minister for European Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom, has expressed support to the UN-led negotiations aiming to solve the political problem of Cyprus.

Malmstrom, who met Tuesday with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, also noted that it is too premature to judge what will happen in December when Turkeys EU accession course will be evaluated by the European Council.

Kyprianou stressed that Turkey has to fully implement and comply with its obligations to Brussels and that if by December, there is no compliance then it will not be business as usual but there will have to be repercussions,, pointed out that this is a European obligation.

In statements after a meeting with Malmstrom, prior to a working lunch, Kyprianou said they would have the opportunity to discuss bilateral issues, noting that even though relations between Cyprus and Sweden go well back in the past, there is always room for improvement, especially in the economy-technology area and tourism.
