  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - CUBA - SUPPORT

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias expressed certainty on Tuesday that Cuba would stand his side at the current critical stage of the Cyprus problem and assured that Nicosia will always be Cuba`s sincere and consistent friend.

Speaking at the University of Havana, President Christofias said direct talks with the Turkish Cypriot side were making some progress, and expressed hope that the Turkish side will abandon once and for all its intransigent positions.

In his speech, President Christofias referred to the common traits in the historical course of Cyprus and Cuba, and the longstanding friendship that binds the two countries.

``Cuba has consistently supported Cyprus during all the years that the Cyprus problem remains unresolved. Cuba`s support was based on principles. Cyprus on its part has defended the right of the Cuban people to choose the socio-economic regime of its country and to determine its own historical course,`` he said.

He added that ``as Cypriots we are grateful for the solidarity, the support and the friendship that unreservedly Cuba, its Government and its people offer to Cypriot people, who are struggling for survival,`` and that ``the opening of an Embassy by the Republic of Cyprus in Havana was a long overdue debt for the longstanding support and friendship of Cuba to Cyprus all these years.``

``I strongly believe that our Embassy in Cuba will not only strengthen relations between Cyprus and Cuba, but will also create one more link for Cyprus with Latin America,`` the President said.

    [02] GAROYIAN - MISSING PERSONS

President of the House of Representatives and Acting President of the Republic Marios Garoyian said on Tuesday that the issue of missing persons is not a political but a humanitarian matter, and should be addressed as such by Turkey.

Speaking after a meeting with a delegation of the Committee of Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons, headed by its President, Nicos Theodosiou, Garoyian said it is Turkey`s obligation and commitment to submit, without further delay, information and evidence necessary to determine the fate of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.

``Our aim is to strengthen the leverage on Turkey to, at last, cooperate by opening its archives,`` Garoyian added.

    [03] CYPRUS - CUBA - AGREEMENTS

Cyprus and Cuba signed five agreements and three memoranda of understanding on Tuesday, in Havana, in the presence of President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Vice President of the Council of the State of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz.

The agreements were signed on behalf of Cyprus by Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou and Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides, and on behalf of Cuba by Ministers of the Government.

The documents signed were a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in agricultural issues, an agreement for cooperation in research and development, an agreement for economic, industrial and technical cooperation, an agreement of cooperation between the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cuban Ministry of Culture, a memorandum of understanding in the sectors of energy, renewable energy sources, oil, gas and relevant technologies, a memorandum of understanding in the sector of sports between the Olympic Committees of the two countries, an agreement concerning tourism, and an agreement covering the sector of sports.

[04] MARITIME CYPRUS - CLIMATE CHANGE

The Maritime Cyprus Conference, a biennial international shipping conference being held in Cyprus, with distinguished speakers and 800 shipping executives from around the globe attending, continued today into its second day, and deliberations were based on a two-tier debate that focused on Climate Change and Air Emissions. There were two debates held during the day, the first focusing on Technical and Operational Measures and the second, on Market Based Solutions.

The first Debate on Technical and Operational Measures concentrated on technical and operational measures that may be applied onboard ships in order to reduce gas emissions.

During the second Debate on Market Based Solutions a number of views were expressed during the debate with regard to finding a Market Based Solution for reducing gas emissions from ships or the introduction of an additional levy on fuel which may be used for research on new technologies for reducing gas emissions.

The deliberations of the second day of the Conference concluded in the afternoon with the Young Executives Session during which a number of views were expressed to facing up to the challenge of climate change.
