  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - OFFICIAL VISIT TO CUBA

    President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias arrived in Havana, Cuba, on Sunday for an official visit, during which he will hold talks with President of Cuba General Raul Castro and will inaugurate the Embassy of Cyprus in Havana.

    President Christofias, who travelled to Havana from New York via Panama City, is accompanied by his wife, Elsie, Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides and Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.

    On his arrival in Cuba, President Christofias referred to the excellent relations between the two countries, and expressed certainty that the opening of a Cypriot Embassy in Havana would further enhance relations, which were established during the presidency of Cyprus` first President Archbishop Makarios III.

    On Monday, President Christofias will lay a wreath at the monument of Jose Marti, the national hero of Cuba during the struggle for independence from the Spaniards, at Plaza de la Revolucion.

    He will then be officially welcomed by Raul Castro at the Palace of the Revolution in Havana, where the official talks will be held. The talks will be followed by a luncheon in honour of President Christofias.

    Later on, President Christofias will inaugurate the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus and will attend a dinner hosted in his honour by Ambassador of Cyprus to Cuba Stavros Loizides.

    On Tuesday, President Christofias will speak at the University of Havana, where he will be presented with an honorary plaque on the occasion of the 280th anniversary since the establishment of the university.

    He will also visit the monument of Archbishop Makarios III, which is in Avenida del Puerto, in Havana, where he will lay a wreath.

    Later on, he will attend the signing of bilateral agreements between Cyprus and Cuba, namely a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in agricultural issues, an agreement for cooperation in research and development, an agreement for economic, industrial and technical cooperation, an agreement of cooperation between the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture and the Cuban Ministry of Culture, a memorandum of understanding in the sectors of energy, renewable energy sources, oil, gas and relevant technologies, a memorandum of understanding in the sector of sports between the Olympic Committees of the two countries, an agreement concerning tourism, and an agreement covering the sector of sports.

    The signing of the agreements will be followed by a press conference by President Christofias.

    Later in the day, President Christofias will be departing from Havana for Cyprus via Paris. He is expected to arrive in Cyprus on Wednesday.

    A Cypriot delegation of businesspeople is also in Havana, headed by Director General of the Federation of Employers and Industrialists Michalis Pilikos and Chairman of the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry and member of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Christodoulos Angastiniotis. The delegation will be participating in a business forum organised by the chambers of the two countries, which will also be signing an agreement of cooperation.

    [02] BARONESS KINNOCK - CYPRUS QUESTION

    Baroness Glenys Kinnock has expressed support to a settlement by the Cypriots for the Cypriots.

    Addressing an event organized by Cypriots living in Britain, in the framework of the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, Baroness Kinnock confirmed that he will visit Cyprus next month.

    British MPs who attended the event were informed about latest developments in the Cyprus question.
