Speaking in a press conference on the priorities of the organization in view of the new session of UN General Assembly, Pascoe told reporters that he had repeated many times UN position on Cyprus issue, although people either pick it or they dont, as he said.

Our effort is not to get one certain kind of agreement or even headed towards a specific direction, but to help the two leaders arrive at the agreement that they believe is the correct one and that both sides will support in the referendum, Pascoe said.

He also pointed out that the organization is optimistic that President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot Leader Mechmet Ali Talat can drive the process.

They have been working very hard at it. I am always amazed that how effective and diligent they are to keep going on what the two sides obviously believe in very deeply, given the amount of noise that goes on around them at all times, said Under-Secretary-General.

He added that there are clearly many critics of the process and Christofias and Talat have to live in that view. He also said that people outside of Cyprus occasionally are taking a potshot at them too on this question.

But frankly, the issues are too important for sort of silliness and frivolous stories around the edges, Pascoe told reporters.

He pointed out that it is very critical that UN will do everything they can to help the two sides come together and to figure out an extremely complex negotiation. As he explained, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General Alexander is working as hard as he can on the island, with the rest of his team.

Pascoe said that UN Secretary General is looking forward to his meetings with both leaders over the next couple of weeks.

[02] PRESIDENT - EVENT - KRANIDIOTIS

Speaking at an event organised by the University of Cyprus and the Institute for Strategic and Development Studies in memory of Yiannos Kranidiotis, President Christofias said that, despite of the fact that his life was cut short, Yiannos Kranidiotis sealed the political developments of the `80s and `90s, and established himself as a politician and diplomat, who successfully combined technocratic training with political activity and contemporary European thought.

President Christofias referred to Yiannos Kranidiotis` instrumental role in Cyprus` EU accession course, and the significant political heritage he left for both Cyprus and Greece. He added that ``the posts Yiannos Kranidiotis was called on to undertake in two very crucial decades for Greece, Cyprus and Europe testify the faith the Greek state, great political leaders of the age and various governments had in him.``

He recalled the words of Yiannos Kranidiotis that the course towards a Cyprus settlement is a step-by-step process which ``demands collectedness, moderation, insistence, perseverance and patience,`` noting that ``with the main aim of reuniting our homeland, we share and put his words in practice.``

[03] EUROSTAT - EMPLOYMENT

According to Eurostat, the employment rate in Cyprus for the second quarter of 2009 fell by 0.5%, compared with the same quarter of the previous year. For the same period, the reduction in employment rate was 1.9% in EU 27 and 1.8% in the euro area.

The reduction rate recorded in Cyprus was the second lower among EU27 (where data are available), after Germany with 0.1% reduction.
