  • [01] LABOUR MINISTER - CYPRUS TALKS

Labour and Social Insurance Minister Sotiroula Charalambous believes that in the second round of UN-led peace talks, scheduled to begin Thursday, there are positive elements from the first phase of the negotiations as a result of the right procedures which President Demetris Christofias has followed.

We have to be realistic and impartial, Charalambous said during the funeral service at the Panagia Evangelistria Church at Dhali of Christoforos Skordis, who was murdered during the 1974 Turkish invasion and his remains were identified through the DNA method, noting that during the direct talks there was convergence between the two sides.

There were certainly disagreements and divergence on serious issues. Clearly and sincerely, the President of the Republic has given his assessment of the first round of the negotiations, noting that he expected greater progress said Charalambous, adding we are ready for a compromise that will lead to a bicommunal, bizonal federation,

The solution, she said, should produce a functional and viable state which will function effectively within the EU and in which all citizens of the United Federal Republic of Cyprus will feel secure and will enjoy their human rights.

Regarding Turkeys role, she said no doubt it is decisive in efforts to find a solution and for this reason we will not stop asking all those who are in a hurry for a solution and especially Turkeys allies, to turn their pressure towards the Turkish side and not us.

She said Turkey must appreciate that in order for its accession course to proceed, it should first fulfill its obligations towards Cyprus and the EU.

In her eulogy of Skordis, Charalambous praised the soldier whose remains were found in a mass grave in 2006, in the Turkish occupied village of Tziaos, defending his country,

According to the Committee of Relatives of Missing Persons and Undeclared Prisoners of War 152 remains have been identified to date, 113 of them were Greek Cypriots and 39 Turkish Cypriots.

More than 200 exhumations at different locations have been carried out so far and about 500 remains have been recovered. There are still 1506 persons whose fate has not been established, he said.
