Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Sotiroula Charalambous has said that the government will continue to support social coherence and development, boost public finances and control counterproductive expenditure.

The Minister, who was invited to comment on a report issued by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Cyprus, reiterated that the government has taken a series of measures to boost the real economy as the world economic crisis continues.

Commenting on the IMF opinion that the Cypriot inflation-indexed wage adjustment mechanism (COLA) should ideally be eliminated or at least better targeted, Charalambous stressed that the government fully respects COLA and does not plan to change it.

The government fully respects COLA and believes that it has contributed to smooth working relations and social coherence in Cyprus, she went on to say, noting that COLA is the result of an agreement among the social partners.

The government fully respects the institution and does not question it, she stressed.
