The position of the Russian Federation on the Cyprus problem, as outlined in the joint declaration signed between the Presidents of Cyprus and Russia, has not changed, Russia`s Ambassador to Cyprus Vyacheslav Shumskiy said on Friday.

Shumskiy, invited to comment on statements made by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Cyprus, refrained from commenting on these statements because ``very often there are instances when what is said by the politician is taken out of the context,`` adding that he suspects ``some distortions there.``

The Russian diplomat said his country`s position to the Cyprus problem was ``clearly stated`` in the declaration signed between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Russian President Dimitry Medvedev during the visit of the former to Moscow in November 2008.

The declaration states that the two countries reaffirm the need for a comprehensive, just and viable settlement in Cyprus, on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979.``

``These provide for the evolution of the unitary state of the Republic of Cyprus into a bicommunal bizonal federation, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, one international personality, which will incorporate political equality, as this is defined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, it adds.

``This position did not change and it is still very valid and we, as a permanent member of the Security Council, are doing everything possible to bring this settlement,`` Shumskiy said, replying to a question.

Asked whether the agreements signed between Russia and Turkey will affect the relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus, Shumskiy said these agreements will not affect the ``cordial and close relations between Russia and Cyprus``.

Noting that the issues discussed in Ankara concerned economic and energy issues which are ``very vital for Russia,`` Shumskiy said, ``I do not think any linkage between the relations between Russia and Turkey and the very cordial and close relations of Russia with Cyprus and our approach to an international issue, which is the solution of the Cyprus problem, these are very distant issues you know.``
