  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has reiterated that the recognition of the Armenian genocide by Turkey would have a liberating effect on Turkey itself and would show that the country is on a course of modernisation. He added that the Republic of Cyprus will continue to support the people of Armenia and the country`s government in efforts for the recognition of the genocide.

President Christofias was speaking in Yerevan at the memorial for the victims of the genocide, where he laid a wreath. He also placed two white carnations at the inextinguishable flame and observed a minute of silence, and then planted a tree at the museum of the monument in memory of the victims.

Speaking after the ceremony, President Christofias said it was unacceptable that Turkey, which is aspiring to become an EU member and wishes to create a modern state, continues to refuse to recognise the genocide.

He noted that Cyprus is continuing its own struggle to reunite the island, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, and wishes to cultivate good neighbourly relations with Turkey, which should modernise its home and foreign policy in order to join the EU.

    [02] CYPRUS - H1N1 CASES

Eighteen new cases of H1N1 flu have been confirmed in Cyprus during the past 24 hours, increasing the total number of confirmed cases to 135, the Health Ministry announced on Tuesday. According to a press release, eleven of the new cases concern Cypriots.

So far 304 persons with flu symptoms have been subjected to laboratory tests and 135 have been diagnosed with the virus.

The Health Ministry said the flow of incidents is fully monitored and there is no cause for concern.

Furthermore it notes that despite the fact that the new flu has taken a pandemic dimension and the number of cases is expected to increase, the symptoms of the flu remain mild.

    [03] CYPRUS - DAVIS CUP

Everything is in place and set for the Cyprus-Ireland tennis games for the Davis Cup, and from July 10 to 12 tennis fans will be able to watch the games at the National Tennis Centre. Cyprus` national team is ready for the games and is aiming at a victory that will bring it closer to first league.

Chairman of the Cyprus Tennis Federation Filios Christodoulou told a press conference that on Wednesday a dinner will be hosted to honour the Cyprus Sports Organisation, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary since its establishment, and the Cyprus national tennis team, which entered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1985, when it lost to Ireland 4-1.

Referring to the schedule of the games, Christodoulou said that on July 9 the official draw of the games will take place in Nicosia and that the opening ceremony would be held on July 10, followed by the beginning of the games. The winner of each game will be the player to reach three sets first and the country to win will be the one to achieve at least three wins.

The official team nominations are Marcos Baghdatis, Photos Kallias, Demetrios Leontis and Rares Cuzdriorean for Cyprus, and Conor Niland, James McGee, Louk Sorensen and Colin O`Brien for Ireland. Javier Moreno will be umpire.
