  • [01] CYPRUS LEADERS - DIRECT TALKS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will hold their 35th meeting on Thursday in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations for a Cyprus settlement.

The meeting, taking place in the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) of Nicosia, will commence at 10:00.

During tomorrow`s meeting, which takes place in the background of a decision to open Limnitis crossing point, Christofias and Talat are expected to continue discussions on territory.

In their last meeting, on June 26, UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative to Cyprus Tayee-Brook Zerihoun announced the leaders seven-point agreement on the opening of Limnitis crossing point, which will facilitate movement to and from the islands northern Turkish occupied areas.

[02] SWEDEN - CYPRUS PEACE EFFORT

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, whose country takes over on Wednesday the EU rotating presidency, has said the EU and therefore the Swedish presidency can play a limited role in efforts towards a political settlement in Cyprus.

According to the Athens News Agency, in statements in Stockholm, Bildt underlined that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, namely Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, and the UN have the main responsibility to settle the problem.

Bildt referred, in an indirect albeit clear way, to Turkeys responsibilities in this respect.

He said the EU role is primarily to point out the benefits that will emerge from a Cyprus settlement and to provide technical support on compatibility of the solution with the acquis communautaire.

Bildt noted that the future of UN peace keeping force mandate in Cyprus is also part of the issues that are on the negotiating table.

    [03] LARNACA FESTIVAL - CATS

Andrew Lloyd Webber`s renowned musical ``Cats``, based on Old Possum`s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, will be on stage in Cyprus as part of the 2009 Larnaca Festival.

``Cats`` first opened in the West End in 1981 and then on Broadway in 1982, has been performed around the world in numerous productions and has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Cypriots and foreign visitors will be able to enjoy the musical, by top performers from London`s West End, on July 1 and 2 at the Pattichion Municipal Amphitheatre of Larnaca

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Moyseos referred to the Festival`s events, which include Michael Flatley`s ``Lord of the Dance`` on July 7, with 46 Irish dancers and musicians, bringing a ``revolution`` into traditional Irish dancing, combining the traditional element with modern pop choreographies.

    [04] CYPRUS - MEDITERRANEAN GAMES

Cyprus clinched on Tuesday its first gold medal in the XVI Mediterranean Games, currently taking place in Pescara, Italy.

Eleni Artymata won the gold clocking a time of 23.16, Cyprus` all time second-best performance. Slovenia`s Sabin Veit finished second with 23.45 and Italy`s Vincenza Cali third with 23.49.

Mariana Zachariades secured the silver medal in women`s pole vault with 4.45, a new Cypriot record.

Cyprus has secured four medals so far and ranks 13th in the medal list.

On Wednesday, Cyprus has high hopes for a second gold medal, with Cypriot champion Kyriacos Ioannou participating in men`s high jump as the favorite for the gold. Meanwhile, Cyprus beat Turkey in beach volley with 2-1, increasing hopes for a seat in the discipline`s semi-final.
