  • [01] GREEK HOUSE SPEAKER VISIT

President of the Hellenic Parliament Dimitrios Sioufas has expressed his solidarity with the people of Cyprus and their struggle to solve Cyprus problem.

Sioufas arrived Monday afternoon in Cyprus for a three day official visit to the island. Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian received and welcomed Sioufas at Larnaka airport.

Once again I am in Cyprus, an EU member state and I would like to thank Cyprus House President Marios Garoyian for the warm welcome he offered to us. My visit to Cyprus falls in the framework of the constructive cooperation between Hellenic Parliament and the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus, he said.

I am here for important reasons. The first of those reasons is the meetings with the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and the House President Marios Garoyian, he added.

He also said that the fact he will be declared honorary citizen of Morphou, a town that has been occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, is a great honour for him, which reflects to the Greek Parliament as a whole.

House President Marios Garoyian welcoming Sioufas and the Greek delegation said that is a great pleasure having Sioufas in Cyprus, the man who I publicly thanked many times for his undiminished interest in the Cyprus problem and, at the same time, for his love towards Cyprus and the people of Cyprus, he added.

Garoyian said that he will have the opportunity to discuss with Sioufas the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the coordination between the two Parliaments.

On Tuesday morning a ceremony will take place at Morphou Municipality, where Sioufas will be declared honorary citizen of Morphou and receive the golden key of the town.

The same day he will be received by President Christofias and hold a meeting with Garoyian.

On Tuesday evening Sioufas and Garoyian will inaugurate the exhibition Caricature in Europe of 27.

He will depart on Wednesday morning.

    [02] US BRYZA CYPRUS

The US has no role in this process except that we care that there will be a settlement that is just, that is lasting, that helps reunify Cyprus into a bizonal, bicommunal federation, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza has said, adding that we would like to look forward and anticipate there will be an agreement by the end of the year.

Bryza who is currently visiting Nicosia, and met on Monday morning Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou also said the US government was pleased that the leaders in Cyprus, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, reached an agreement on the opening of Limnitis crossing point, noting that this is the most concrete, constructive step forward that we can all see in quite some time, adding that they look forward to this agreement being implemented as quickly as possible.

Bryza said he had a very in depth and constructive discussion with Iacovou adding that he is here to listen.

    [03] RUSSIAN FM CYPRUS ISSUE

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stressed the common positions of Russia and Cyprus as regards the settlement of the Cyprus question and the high level of their bilateral cooperation in a press release on the meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Cyprus Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou, on the sidelines of the informal meeting of the OSCE Foreign Ministers at Corfu.

The press release said that during the meeting the two Ministers expressed explicitly the common positions of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus in favour of a comprehensive, just and viable settlement of the Cyprus question, on the basis of the UN Security Council relevant resolutions.

It also noted that the two Ministers exchanged views on the current situation of the Russian-Cypriot relations and reaffirmed the high-level of their partnership in various fields of their bilateral cooperation.
